Washington (August 29, 2024) - Following a nationally competitive application process, incoming University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) graduate student Dhiraj Lamsal is one of 15 individuals selected by the U.S. Department of State for the Foreign Affairs Information Technology Fellowship 2024 cohort.
In this two-year fellowship program funded by the Department of State, Lamsal will receive up to $43,500 annually in academic funding for a two-year IT-related master’s degree program at UMGC. The fellowship also includes two summer internships with stipend support – a domestic internship in Washington, D.C., at the Department of State and an overseas internship at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Lamsal will receive professional development and personalized mentoring during the fellowship. Upon successful completion of the fellowship and the Foreign Service entry requirements, he will receive an appointment in the Foreign Service as a Diplomatic Technology Officer.
Dhiraj Lamsal
Lamsal was born in Nepal and immigrated to the United States. He speaks English, Nepali, and Hindi fluently. He holds an Associate of Applied Science in Computer Information Systems from Baltimore City Community College and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Networks and Cybersecurity from the University of Maryland Global Campus. As a FAIT Fellow, Lamsal is pursuing a Master of Science in Cybersecurity Technology from the University of Maryland Global Campus. In his free time, Lamsal enjoys reading books, exploring nature, and contributing to community tech projects.
I have an appreciation for the challenges of traversing multiple cultural environments and how technology can connect and empower people,” says Lamsal. “I am excited to become a FAIT Fellow, so I can contribute to diplomacy and make a difference in information technology at the U.S. Department of State.”

The FAIT Fellowship aims to attract top technology talent that represents the ethnic, racial, gender, social, and geographic diversity of the United States. The FAIT Fellowship encourages applications from women, minority groups historically underrepresented in the Foreign Service, and those with financial need.
